Antarctica - The Coldest continent

Antarctica, the land of penguins, is the coldest continent on earth. The average temperature there is -49 C and the lowest temperature ever recorded on earth, -89 C, was recorded at the Russian Base Vostok in Antarctica in 1983.

One of the reasons why Antarctica is so cold is that the continent's permanent reflects about 80% of the suns radiation. This means that only 20% of the energy from the sun is absorbed.

Another reason why Antarctica is so cold is its location over the Earth's South pole. How much heat an area receives from the sun depends on whether the sun is overhead or not. This is why it is always hot near equator. Because the Earth's surface curves at the poles, the sun's rays are spread over a wide area and so temperatures are almost always below zero. In fact, it is so cold here that no human beings live in Antarctica, except for the most dedicated scientists.

Deserts become very cold at night

You know the deserts are very hot places, but did you know that they can become very cold at night? The sky above a desert is usually very clear. So during the day, the ground absorbs most of the sunlight that strikes it, heating the surrounding air.

At night the reverse happens. Since there are no clouds over a desert to trap the heat, the land gives off heat rapidly, and it becomes very chilly. In fact, though daytime temperatures in the desert average 38 c, in some deserts it can get down to -4 c at night.

Why is seawater salty?

Everyone knows that seawater is salty. This is because most rivers and streams empty themselves into the sea. Rivers are strewn with rock and plant debris. These rocks contain many minerals and salts (especially sodium chloride) which dissolve in the water, a considerable amount of salt gets dissolved in the sea water.

When these waters evaporate due to the heat of the sun, they leave the salt behind. The evaporated water is brought back to the land in the form of rain, and the rivers carry the water again to the sea. As this cycle is repeated, the amount of salt increases, but the water content does not.

Will the oceans continue to become saltier? No, that's not likely. In fact, the salt content has reached a steady state. Dissolved salts are being removed from seawater to form new minerals at the bottom and the ocean as fast as rivers and hydrothermal processes are providing new salts.

Did you know that fresh water is not entirely free of dissolved salt? Of course, we cannot taste this salt because its concentration is too low.
