How does a tornado form?

Tornadoes generally form in the severe ling lived thunderstorms that are known as super cells. Deep within a vast thundercloud, a column of strongly rising warm air is set spinning by high winds. As more and more air is sucked inti this swirling column, the column starts spinning even faster and faster, and a corkscrewing funnel starts to descend from the base of the cloud. This funnel is a tornado. The funnel acts like a giant vacuum cleaner, sucking things that lie in its path into the air, tearing the tops of the trees and causing death and destruction on a great scale.
