Kalidasa was a Sanskrit poet and dramatist,probably the greatest Indian writer of any epoch. Kalidasa was a member of 'Navaratna' in Vikramaditya's kingdom at Ujjain. Of his various works six identified as genuine the dramas Abhijnanashakuntalam( The Recognition of Shakuntala), Vikramorvashiyam, and Malavikagnimitram; the epic poems Raghuvamsam; and the lyric Meghadutam. In addition to these even Ritusamharam is also believed to be his composition.

Abhijnanashakuntalam is usually judged the best Indian literary effort of any period. Kalidasa's beautifully written works, also speak of the society of those times as a courtly aristocracy sure of its dignity and power. His works till date inspire artists in various fields like drama, films, theatre and literature as well.
